This Week's Speaker
Sandra L. Thurman, World AIDS Day

In honor of World AIDS Day this week, we have a very special speaker - Sandy Thurman, a renowned leader in the HIV field and a global advocate for vulnerable populations. For over 30 years, she has collaborated with a wide range of partners to advance development and management of HIV/AIDS programs and policies at the local, national, and global levels. While she is known most for her focus on HIV prevention, care and treatment, and policy, Ms. Thurman has made important contributions to polio eradication, women’s health and children’s health. Help With Books for Dresden and Kingsley after Friday's Meeting

After the meeting this Friday, we invite everyone who can to stay with us at Flemings and help prepare our annual gift to the students of Dresden and Kingsley - a new book for each student at those schools. It's a 20+ year tradition that reflects our commitment to literacy, one of Rotary International's six areas of focus. If the past is a good indicator, we should be finished with our "book work" in about an hour.

In Memoriam
A Tribute to Past President Mike Feeney

As reported last week, we are sad to note that Michael J. Feeney of Dunwoody, Georgia passed away on November 21, 2019 at the age of 83.

Mike Feeney became a member of the Rotary Club of Dunwoody on February 21, 1992. He was proposed and sponsored for membership by Dunwoody Rotarian Patricia B. Burttram.

It wasn’t long before Mike went from not being just another member, but became a dedicated Rotarian. Both Mike and his wife Ann were very involved in the work of the Dunwoody club, from Fourth of July to decorating and staging auction items at the Governor's Ball to much, much more. Mike served as our club president in 1997-1998, when the RI presidential theme was “Show Rotary Cares.” At the 1998 District 6900 Conference at Jekyll Island, Georgia, the Rotary Club of Dunwoody was recognized with the Best All Around Club award.

Be sure to click on the "more" link for the rest of the story of this great Dunwoody Rotarian. [more]

Service Opportunity
Help Us Support Toys for Tots

For many years, Dunwoody Rotarians have been very generous in supporting local Marines in their Toys for Tots Drive. We want to make this the best year ever! So look for toys, bikes and games and bring them to the Holiday luncheon on December 13! With your generosity, we can make this holiday season the best yet for needy local youth!

Best Fellowship Opportunity of the Year
Join Us for the Annual Dunwoody Holiday Luncheon - RSVP Requested

Join us at 11 a.m. at the Dunwoody Country Club for the best gathering of the year for the Dunwoody Family of Rotary. Catch up with friends in the social hour that starts us off, then enjoy the sounds of the Dresden Sunshine Choir. And don't forget an unwrapped gift for Toys for Tots. Please RSVP through the calendar on the website or by contacting Ardy Bastien this week.

Dresden students have entertained us at the Holiday Luncheon for more than 15 years ... part of a long partnership in education that still includes a book for every child during the holiday student and has included English as a Second Language classes for parents, Character Education, Junior Achievement, citizenship awards and a joint project between students and Rotarians to collect coats and other items for the Atlanta Women and Children Day Shelter.

In keeping with our Holiday Luncheon traditions, we will recognize people for their recent contributions to The Rotary Foundation and present the report of our nominating committee for the 2020-21 Rotary Year.

Service Opportunity
Welcome the GRSP World to Atlanta in January - Still Need a Few Host Families ... and More

From January 17-19, 2020, Dunwoody will join with the Rotary Clubs of Gainesville and Metro Atlanta, and the Rotaract Club of Atlanta Metro to host the GRSP Leadership Conference. This is a 15+ year Dunwoody Rotary tradition, and we expect to have nearly all of the 40 students in this year's class with us for the weekend.

There are a variety of ways you can help - here are two:

1. Be a weekend host family. If you sign up for this, you would provide:

  • housing on Friday and Saturday night
  • breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings
  • transportation that includes pick-up Friday night, delivery to Oglethorpe on Saturday and Sunday mornings, and pick-up Saturday from Oglethorpe

You are also invited to participate in a group dinner at one of our Dunwoody Rotarian’s home with your students on Saturday night - and to join us for any part of the weekend you'd like to attend. More details to follow, but take time now to consider the opportunity. If you would like to volunteer as a host, contact Jackie Cuthbert at 770-597-1183 or by email at cuthbert@mindspring.com

2. Volunteer to be part of the welcoming committee at the Atlanta History Center on Friday afternoon. We are looking for volunteers to check students in, be the "host" for one of the 8 groups as they tour the AHC, and/or to take students from the AHC to Breakout Games in Buckhead at the end of our AHC visit.
