Throwback Thursdays with Past Presidents
President's Message July 14

It was great fun last week to play Roswell Rotary Jeopardy again and hear our contestants' bafflement as to which past president accomplished what in their year as president. That was just a teaser for what we are going to learn from these men and women throughout this Rotary year. As I mentioned, we have 28 past presidents still active in our club - that's more than the membership of some whole Rotary clubs! Twice a month, we will have a Throwback Thursday and invite a past president to share stories from their year - both serious and funny. You don't want to miss these. First up - Maurice Hillard - 1966-67.

This Week's Surprise?
July 14 Program- Rotary's Impact

Are there more games in store this week?  Come find out about our club's impact in the community and the world.  Last year we undertook a significant Community Impact Project partnering with Wellstar North Fulton to create podcasts and videos to address behavioral health issues for our young people after years of COVID and disrupted lives.  Soon we will  announce this year's project that will again serve our Roswell community and be the major focus of our Golf & Tennis Tournaments.  Come hear about our plans for the year and opportunities for our members to engage in service and fellowship.

2022 Golf & Tennis Tournament Update
Need the Help of EVERY Roswell Rotary Member

Volunteering at the tournament is FUN! Just ask Roswell Rotarian Volunteers shown above Mary Trapp, Jacquie Digieso, and Alicia Hughes!

We need the help of EVERY member of Roswell Rotary as we prepare for this year’s tournaments on September 12th.

Join the Golf & Tennis Czar every Thursday at 11:15AM to find out how YOU can get involved.

Charity Spotlight
The Drake House

Why we do what we do!

The Drake House is a short-term crisis housing, education and empowerment program for homeless mothers and their children, designed to assist the family in working toward housing self-sufficiency.

Fast Facts:

• Founded in 2004 as a Leadership North Fulton class project to address the growing number of homeless women and children in the area. The doors opened in 2006.

• Named in honor of Roswell native Mary Drake, a founder of North Fulton Community Charities.

• The Drake House assists families toward becoming financially stable, contributing members of the community through a variety of programs, including: Housing and food, so families can remain in the community and children can remain in their current schools, Preserving the family unit (boys over the age of 12 are allowed to remain with their family, rather than go to a men’s shelter), Children and teen after-school enrichment programs, , life skills, education, and empowerment planning for adults, Career coaching including assistance with resume development, interviewing skills, clothing, skills development, career seminars, and job leads

• Each year, the organization’s private housing serves approximately 50 families and 100 children.

• The Drake House has served over 350 families with more than 650 children since opening its doors.

Past President Moment Episode #1
Maurice Hilliard- Club president 1966-67

What was Roswell Rotary like in 1966 when we met under the water tower near Oak Street? We are blessed to have a past president from over 50 years ago who can tell us about traditions that continue to this day. You don't want to miss Judge Hilliard’s Roswell Rotary history lesson.

Sat, July 16 Butterflies & Walk in the Woods
Chattahoochee Nature Center hosts "Walk with a Doc"

Free Admission for Rotary Walkers

This is a celebration and periodic check-in for how you are doing with your doctor's advice to do something physical. We're not judging; we're supportive.  We're like-minded people finding a better, fun way to do what the doctor ordered.  :-)

Our health talk will be Podiatrist Dr Richard Kaufman speaking about keeping your feet happy.

Then Dr Kaufman will join us for your choice of 2 or 3+ mile walks including access to the new riverfront trail.

Along the way, we participate in the special Butterfly Encounter before the general public comes to visit. A  unique opportunity to be up close and personal with hundreds of native butterflies surrounded by colorful nectar plants. Photo opportunities abound.

Storms & Watermelon
4th of July Fun Without Fireworks

Thank you Mickey Deaton for the most wonderful 4th of July celebration ever. Even though the storms sent us running for the cars at the end, it was a wonderful time! The fellowship of fellow Roswell Rotarians, the ideas for service flowing back and forth, the amazing grilling of those hamburgers and hot dogs and the sides people brought, and the watermelon-oh my, the watermelon. Ice cold South Georgia watermelons. We sure made some wonderful memories on the 4th. Join us next year!!!

After Hours Visits the VEO

After Hours members John Davies, Lindsay Davies and Amanda Verdin took a tour of the Veterans Empowerment Organization on Saturday morning. VP of Veteran Services Olga Lopez led the tour of the VEO facilities, including their brand new women's housing--they were cozy and warm! The VEO has some exciting upgrades on the horizon and After Hours can't wait to support this worthy organization as they continue to grow and support our Vets.
