SPEAKER THIS WEEK: Tony Barnhart's

The 2018 college football season will be Tony Barnhart's 43rd as a reporter for newspapers, television, internet, and radio. Tony joined the SEC Network which launched August 14, 2014.

He contributes to the network’s studio programming and also contributes columns on SECSports.com. Tony brings a wealth of experience having covered the conference for more than 20 years. He began covering SEC sports at the Atlanta Journal Constitution which led to extensive reporting roles at ESPN and CBS.

Tony is a 1976 graduate of the Henry W. Grady School of Journalism, University of Georgia. In 2017 Tony was recognized with the DiGamma Kappa Distinguished Achievement Award. DiGamma Kappa is the national broadcast society at the University of Georgia Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

In 2016 Tony received two honors:
• He was inducted into the Grady College of Fellows at the University of Georgia.
• He received National Football Foundation recognition (Athens, GA chapter) for his contribution to amateur football.

Tony is the author of five books on college football and has received numerous awards for sports reporting including the 2009 Bert McGrane Award (Football Writers Association of America – Hall of Fame).

Tony lives in Dunwoody, Ga., with his wife, Maria, who was his high school sweetheart. Tony and Maria have now taken on the wonderful role of G-Dad and G-Mom for their
granddaughter, Sloane, who came into the starting lineup on Aug. 23, 2012.

Help Collect Medical Equipment: FODAC and DeKalb Rotary Council

Help Collect Medical Equipment: FODAC and DeKalb Rotary Council … July 28, 9 am – 1 pm

For the second year, Dunwoody Rotarians can help collect home medical equipment for FODAC, a 501©3 that collects, repairs, and provides over 7,000 HME items to the public each year at no cost. There are two ways you can help:

  • Join Rotarians on Saturday, July 28 from 9 am – 1 pm to help collect donations. You have a double benefit – you’re helping people AND getting to know Rotarians and Rotaract members from other clubs!
  • Donate HME that you have at home. We’ve included a list below for your consideration. You can bring equipment on the 28th or call 770-491-9014 ext. 114 before July 24 to schedule a pick-up on July 28.

HME You Can Donate: Manual & Electric Wheelchairs (including footrests), Scooters, Standers, Adaptive Strollers, Corner chairs, Gait trainers, Rollators, Shower supports, Toilet supports, Therapy aides, Specialized mattresses (no regular mattresses), Walkers, Canes, Crutches, & Forearm Crutches, Bathing aids, Braces, Air casts, Hoyer lifts, Hospital beds

President Rick is a big believer in FODAC. “Recycling medical equipment to people who otherwise couldn't afford it is a wonderful thing to do.”

If you can, join us at the 57th Fighter Group Restaurant, 3829 Clairmont Road, Atlanta, GA 30341, at 9 a.m. on Saturday, July 28.

New GRSP Student
Mathilde Illum

Introducing Mathilde Illum – Our 2018-19 GRSP Student

Mathilde Illum will arrive from Denmark on August 1 for a year as Dunwoody’s student in the Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP). She will attend Oglethorpe University. Her host parents will be Jackie Cuthbert and Lorri Christopher.

Mathilde comes from a family of five – she is the middle child – with an older sister and a younger brother. Her mother is a Rotarian, and her aunt was a GRSP scholar in 1989-1990. Mathilde was scheduled to be a Rotary Youth Exchange student a few years ago but had to cancel due to an injury (which has since mended itself).

Mathilde is not sure what my final education path holds, but wants to work with something humanitarian or creative. Today she volunteers at the Red Cross second hand shop a few times a week and is a tutor for the freshman class. She will enter university in Denmark after her GRSP year, because the Danish educational system does not allow break-offs during university, even for a scholarship.

As to her goals for her GRSP year, Mathilde says, “I would love to achieve a deeper understanding of American culture and its people, and hopefully build lasting bonds with American families and international students. I would especially like to explore American community service and voluntary work, e. g. assisting in soup kitchens. I want to experience what the USA is really like, and see the real structure, rather than the one presented in pop culture and the news. My deep interest for history is also a major reason, as this could help me in learning more about American history than what I might have learnt growing up.”

You’ll learn more about Mathilde when she arrives at the beginning of August, and when she speaks to the club in September. We’ll keep you posted as to when her flight arrives at Atlanta Hartsfield so you can be part of the welcome committee!

Remembering Former Dunwoody Rotarian Hagood Bellinger

This past week, former Dunwoody Hagood Bellinger died at the age of 77. Hagood joined RCD in the 1991-92 Rotary year when Lang Wooddy was our president. He was a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, sponsored Buzz Law as a new Rotarian, and served on the board for Junior Achievement. Hagood was a Vice President at BellSouth, and is remembered as an avid golfer and Georgia Tech supporter. His family and friends remember that he “took on life’s challenges with a can-do spirit” and was a mentor to many.
