What a year!
I’d like to begin by thanking each member of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs for allowing me the privilege to serve as president. It is an honor to serve beside you and we’ve accomplished so much. Here are highlights:
Last summer, we thanked the Fulton County School Board for their support of RLI last spring, kicked-off movies by moonlight, had our first visit to Puebla, Mexico with the North Atlanta Rotaract club in hopes of writing a Global Grant with the Rotary Club of Puebla Colonial. We held our first family of Rotary event at Brooklyn Café – where we presented them with a plaque of thanks for their continued support - and met our GRSP student Anna Boggis. In October Orrin Hudson inspired us through chess and rap, we participated in the North Fulton Day of Service at Lake Forest ES and the Fulton County Library, recognized our Police, Fire and EMT Service men and women, hosted our first ever Police Station Lunch along with our annual Fire House dinners.
In November Margie Kersey kicking-off our record setting Centennial Giving Campaign. We also addressed bylaw changes to reflect the updates to the Rotary International Council of Legislation and began our plan to take advantage of flexibility once per month beginning in January. In December we met our Rotary Youth Exchange candidate, Elise Flannigan, who was accepted and will travel to Japan later this year. We supported more than 30 children for the Holidays in collaboration with the CAC. Our Family of Rotary event at Nancy Schroeder’s home – what a wonderful way to enjoy Rotary fellowship and celebrate the season.
January, we hosted our first End Human Trafficking Now (EHTN) educational forum at North Springs Charter High School in collaboration with Brookhaven, Buckhead and Dunwoody clubs. We sponsored an assembly at Sandy Springs Charter Middle School – Unneccessary Monsters, installed the new Interact officers at Mt. Vernon Upper School, had our first Monday Night family of Rotary event at 5 Season’s Brewing Co. at the Prado and the Farias’ left for India on the Rotary Friendship Exchange visit.
In February, we learned that our own Jim Squire will be District Governor in 2019-20. Rotary Has Heart was proclaimed from the city on 2/14/17 and we collaborated with the Police Explorers and the CAC to bring in and sort gently used items for the thrift store on Roswell Road. April we agreed to host a Rotary Youth Exchange inbound student, Louis Galli will join us this fall from France and will attend Riverwood International Charter School. We can’t forget the District Conference afloat, where we were awarded highest district conference participation for our category! May brought our annual Laws of Life presentation, our second annual Senior Senior Pram and we honored our Sandy Springs elementary, middle and high school teachers at our annual Teacher of the Year Awards luncheon. We wrapped up this amazing year June with our Rotary International Convention here in Atlanta!
Whew, what an amazing list of accomplishments and I didn’t even mention everything! Thank you again for all that you do for your community, district and the world!
Yours In Rotary Service,
Lisa
Immediate Past President 2017-18
