Join Us This Thursday for Our Awards and Installation

Join us this Thursday night, June 27, at the Pavillion in the Dunwoody Nature Center, as one Rotary year ends and another begins. The Pavillion is new and located in the woods overlooking the meadow. I'm sure you're going to enjoy the venue. The address of the Nature Center is 5343 Roberts Dr, Dunwoody, GA 30338. Please be aware that there is construction in the area. The new Austin Elementary School is in final stages of construction and the entrance way is being expanded to handle the expected traffic. Upon entrance from Roberts Drive, go the bottom of the hill. There is ample parking but some walking is required; maybe 300 yards. Signage will be in place to direct you to the Pavillion.

The event begins at 6 pm. Arrive as early as possible so that we can all enjoy the event. There's an open bar, limited at three per person, and the food will be a five-course, buffet style, American and Asian cuisine, standup type affair. Come thirsty and hungry. Somewhere around 6:30 I'll begin the formalities, nothing outrageous but enough that it has to be organized. The event will end promptly at 8 pm.

It is my sincere hope that you attend. Governor Court will be in attendance and I'm sure he'd like to personally congratulate everyone on the successful year we've had. Please make every effort.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Parade with Us on July 4; No Meeting July 5

Our new members - with support from Past Presidents Jennie Stipick and Jackie Cuthbert - have revived our long-time Dunwoody tradition of marching in the Dunwoody Fourth of July parade. We have a fabulous float planned and trinkets to pass out along the parade route … and we'd love to have more Dunwoody Rotarians, partners, kids and grandkids to join us in spreading the word that the Rotary Club of Dunwoody has been Connecting the World for 35 years!

There are also opportunities to work in our Hot Dog Stand … another great Dunwoody tradition!

Contact Jennie Stipick if you want to take to the parade route - or Kobelah Bennah to help with the hot dog stand. (See the article that follows about baked goods too.)

Take Me Out to the Ball Game: Gwinnett Stripers on July 20

On July 20, the Rotary Club of Dunwoody will make its annual trek to a Gwinnett Stripers Game at Coolray Field, 2500 Buford Drive, Lawrenceville, GA 30043. Similar to last year, the Club has arranged for a Buffet Dinner (ballpark food) prior to the Game. The cost is $ 29 per person which includes the buffet dinner and a box seat on the first base side where hopefully it will be cooler than it was along the third base line last year. Game time is 6:05 pm, so plan to be there by 5:00 pm at the latest.

The Gwinnett Stripers are the Atlanta Braves’ Triple A Affiliate and that night will host the Rochester Redwings, the Triple A Affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. The Twins currently are in first place in the AL Central so the July 20 game should be a good game featuring numerous future MLB players. The first 2500 fans through the gate will receive a Stripers’ Tee Shirt as well. The game, of course, is secondary to a night of fun and fellowship for the Dunwoody Family of Rotary.

Everyone is invited. Plan to bring the kids and grandkids. If you wish to attend, please RSVP by July 1, 2019, to Ken Levy at kennethlevy99@gmail.com, in person or by telephone or IM at (770) 686-2651.Hope to see you at the Ballgame!!!!

Speak Up If You Have Ideas for Our Speaker Calendar!

Over time, our weekly speakers have offered us inspiration, new perspectives and a wealth of information. We'd like that tradition to continue. That's why our speaker committee is off and running for the 2019/20 Rotary year – with some great speakers already lined up for July and August. Mark your calendar and invite your friends to hear:

  • July 12: Pat Graham, Rare Books
  • July 19: Cary King, 1968 Vietnam Tet Offensive
  • July 26: Caesar Gaiters, DeKalb Rotary Council Chair re: Rotary and Entrepreneurship
  • August 2: Tony Barnhart, 2019 College Football
  • August 9: Todd Galanti, GM, Costco Perimeter
  • August 16: Rodney Mims Cook, The National Monuments Foundation
  • August 23: Larry Schall, President, Oglethorpe University

Kathy Brandt and the committee welcome your ideas and help finding speakers. If you can think of someone with an interesting story to tell, please let Kathy know at kgbrandt1@comcast.net.
