Cottage School House and Culinary Arts Vocational Program

“We are excited that these gardening structures will provide opportunities for hands-on, experiential horticultural skills for our students for years to come, and we appreciate the Alpharetta Rotary Club for facilitating this important educational experience.”
- Amanda Burke, Cottage School Science Teacher

The Cottage School is the recipient of a brand new greenhouse and raised gardening boxes for its students, courtesy of the Alpharetta Rotary Club. Dedicated Rotarians supported this project in hopes that the kids will develop horticultural skills and knowledge that can be utilized as possible career avenues upon graduation.

Project Scope

The garden’s harvest will provide the culinary class with fresh ingredients as well as the opportunity for the business and entrepreneur classes to market and sell produce at school events.

Amanda Burke, a science teacher at the school, will conduct a gardening class in which students will learn about soil testing, adjusting pH and alkalinity, composting, germination, planting, the seasonality of vegetables and herbs and planning a garden.

“Current research has suggested that the only way to feed our rapidly increasing global population is through small-scale sustainable gardens,” Burke said in a statement.

Rotarian Involvement

40 Rotarians (32% of the club) and family volunteered every weekend to construct the greenhouse during the Summer Break. Approximately 300 volunteer hours were spent at a cost of $4000 to the club.
