East Cobb Rotary's affiliation as a community partner with The Center for Family Resources (CFR) draws us to this annual project of providing for and preparing Thanksgiving food boxes for the hungry in Cobb County. We keep this project on the club's calendar each year as one part of our work in SERVING HUMANITY.
Though the exact number is unknown, most club members donated food items for the Thanksgiving food boxes and also contributed grocery store gift cards. Seven (7) club members (11%) spent over 30 hours on October 12, 2016 assisting CFR case managers in reviewing documentation and completing paper work for families who had completed registration forms requesting this service.
Another group of thirteen (13) Rotarians (20% of club members) gathered on November 16th to fill boxes with food items appropriate to the number of family members to be fed from that box. On November 19th prequalified families arrived to pick up their food boxes, and East Cobb Rotarians placed boxes in clients' vehicles
This annual project gives our club the opportunity to bring nutrition and some joy to families, especially for children during the Thanksgiving break week when many will miss the meals they usually count on having at school.
East Cobb Rotary will present $4,000 to The Center for Family Resources at our Dog Days Give Back celebration on March 8th for work in feeding the hungry throughout the year. Also, one of our club members picks up day old bread from Fresh Market on Fridays and delivers it to CFR for their food pantry. This project extends beyond its seasonal emphasis.
