Junior Diabetes Research Fund

Alpharetta Rotarian, Ted Schwartz, applied for the Alpharetta Rotary Grant Application to be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) because it is the leading research organization seeking to find a cure for type 1 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is the deadlier disease of diabetes as about about 10% of all diabetic cases are Type 1. Today about 1.5 million Americans suffer from Type 1 diabetes which includes Ted and his 12 year old son Blake.

Type 1 diabetes is a result of when the person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food. As a result diabetics must manage the disease by giving the body insulin doses based off blood sugar levels in conjunction with the intake of food, diet and exercise.

JDRF’s goal is to progressively remove the impact of Type 1 diabetes (T1D) from people’s lives. JDRF funds research to deliver a cure for T1D and its complications. As a family who lives with this auto-imune disease every day I will not stop until there’s a cure found for my son Blake. Every day I feel like a chemist always trying to figure out the right levels of insulin we should have in order to feel “good” throughout the day, its a daunting task for us and unfortunately it never ends. I am proud to be a T1D advocate and I want to thank the Rotary of Alpharetta for their consideration of this grant to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
