Through district grant funds and club funds combined, the local literacy project - Kindergarten Serves was created. In collaboration with Abbotts Hill Elementary, a 2 phase project for the 2016-2017 school year was implemented. The school staff - Dr. Roytunda Stabler - Principal, Linda Dickinson - Media Specialist, and Amber Coxwell - Kindergarten Lead have been integral and supportive of all aspects.
Phase 1 - 20 books focused on community, service and kindness were selected that met the school requirements were purchased. Beginning September 22 and for the following several weeks, Rotarians were guest readers every Thursday morning sharing these books with the 110 Kindergarteners.
Before the Thanksgiving holiday, Each Kindergartener was given their very own copy of 'Ordinary Mary's Extraordinary Deed' to take home and keep. We donated the 20 books that were shared with the children to the School Media Center.
Phase 2 - After the Christmas holidays, the children have skyped with local seniors at Ivy Hall Assisted Living Community sharing books about spreading kindness and connection to community virtually. As part of 'Rotary has Heart' month, we partnered with the Kindergarteners providing the supplies for the children to make a personalized Valentine for each of the Ivy Hall senior residents. Our club then presented theses cards for the seniors at the Valentine Social.
A trip to the school is being planned for the spring for the seniors to meet the children and celebrate a wonderful year of community, service and kindness.
