The LaGrange Rotary Club and LaGrange College celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Walter Y. Murphy Scholarship fund by planning to double the size of the current endowment fund. Each scholarship recipient is chosen based on academic ability, financial need and a record of volunteerism and service above self. LaGrange College manages and administers the Walter Y. Murphy Scholarship Fund and selects the scholarship recipients.
In 1997, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the LaGrange Rotary Club, The Walter Y. Murphy scholarship fund was initiated as a joint project of the LaGrange Rotary Club and LaGrange College. Having been both the LaGrange College President (1980-1996) and the Rotary 6900 District Governor (1991-1992), Dr. Murphy was the ideal person to be honored.
The LaGrange Rotary Club kicked-off this 20th anniversary event, at a special meeting of the Rotary Club at LaGrange College on November 2nd by announcing a 20-month blitz campaign to add $250,000 to the endowment fund. The main thrust of the campaign is to obtain contributions starting in November 2016 and continuing through June 2018; however, pledges will be accepted to be paid over as much as five years.
By the end of 2016, the Walter Y. Murphy fund had already collected $20,150.50. With the matching grant from the Callaway Foundation over $40,000 has been collected with 17 months remaining in the 20-month blitz campaign.
