This is the eighth year the students of the West Georgia Community Interact Club teamed up with members of the LaGrange Rotary to create an entry for the LaGrange Christmas Parade. This year's theme was "A Star is Born".
After brainstorming for options on how to best address the city's theme the members of the Interact club voted to go with the traditional Christmas celebration of Jesus' birth.
Construction was started in early November and was completed for the December 1st parade. To save both money and resources we have been using our original structure each year, redesigning it to align with the current theme, this year it became a stable. Interact students worked along with Rotary club members and were taught how to properly use the power tools and expand on the general theme of the float. Rotarians volunteered their labor, time and materials for this project. Rotary members stepped up throughout this project to offer their time and expertise.
Rotarian Taylor Merrill offers three bays of his mini-storage facility for the construction of the float and is often onsite to assist with the construction. Rotarian and Interact club advisor, Barbara Henigin works directly with the students as well as a number of other Rotarians who drop by.
The night of the parade the students are joined by Rotarians to march alongside of the float. The parade was covered by the local newspapers and was televised by the LaGrange cable network. This year we came in second in the Civic category.
Taylor lends both his commercial property plus his talents each year.
Construction time isn't all work, the students did have fun while working on our float.
The students' costumes were put together with the help of one of the mothers.
We never enter thinking we will place but the 8th year was the charm...
The parade starts when it finally gets dark so all of the floats glow with their lights.
Students were the main characters on the float while Rotarians marched along either side greeting community members as we went along.
