Our project was a meal packing event conducted in cooperation with STOP HUNGER NOW. The event was held in the cafeteria at Cambridge High School in Milton, Georgia after school on Friday January 20, 2017. The primary event lasted from 3:30 to 5:30 with pre-event set up lasting from 2:30-3:30.
In addition to the 12 Rotarians that directly participated in the event, we had 3 family members of Rotarians (1 spouse and 2 children), 30 members of the Cambridge High School Interact Club, 8 members of the City of Milton Fire Department and 4 members of the City of Milton Police Department. A great side benefit of this project is exposing the high school students to a positive interaction with the local police and fire department professionals.
STOP HUNGER NOW is a Raleigh, NC based organization that distributes pre-packaged meals in developing countries through feeding programs operated by partner organizations that promote education, encourage children to attend school, improve students' health and nutrition, address gender inequalities, stimulate economic growth and fight child labor. STOP HUNGER NOW also provides meals in response to crises. At our event, we packed just over 10,000 meals.
STOP HUNGER NOW delivered the meal ingredients and packing supplies to Cambridge High School in Milton, Georgia. Our volunteers set up the packing stations, organized the raw ingredients, measured and scooped ingredients into meal bags, weighed and sealed the bags, boxed and stacked the meals on pallets and loaded the pallets into STOP HUNGER NOW's truck at the end of the event. Meal ingredients were be purchased directly from STOP HUNGER NOW. The meal ingredients consisted of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables and a vitamin fortified flavoring mix. The packed meals are stored and transported easily and have a multi-year shelf life. Our meals were designated for delivery to a partner organization working with schools in Mozambique.
