Steve brought a long record of involvement in civic and community affairs to the job of District Governor. He was a long time trustee of the Georgia Rotary Student program, and he made it one of the priorities of his year as governor. He also inherited the job of preparing the district for the changes to be made at the end of his term. W.G. (Bill) McWilliams of the Rome Club had been nominated as Governor for the term 1983- 84. Bill was a former state amateur golf champion and a retired U.S. Navy Commander. As Rome would be in the new 691 District, Bill would be the first governor of that district, and it was necessary to select another candidate for 690. The nominating committee met in late September and selected Frank E. Bentley, of Sandy Springs, as District Governor Nominee for 1983-84. Fred Witherington of the Carrollton Club was selected as Chairman of the District Conference held on May 1-2-3. RI President Hiroji Mukasa was represented by John F. Van Cott, of Unadilla, N.Y. There were 926 in attendance.

Theodore T. Molner, of Cuthbert, District Governor 1937-38, died on February 21. “Tee” was one of the founders of the GRSP and remained active in the program as long as he was physically able. After retirement he was made a Trustee Emeritus.

The Roswell Club sponsored a new club in Alpharetta, with charter night on March 23, 1983.

Steve concluded a successful year with 4109 members in the district with an average attendance of 84.98%.
