On October 21st, 2019, Shawn Brown, the president and COO of Snap Tech shared with the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs important information on cyber security.
Snap Tech IT was founded in 2001. Since then the company has been awarded numerous honors including being named one the of Top 501 Managed Service Providers in the world and being listed 3 times in Inc. 5000’s annual guide to the fastest growing companies.
Having immense knowledge of cyber security, Shawn’s slide program started with defining cybercrime. He descripted it both with broad terms and specific. He talked about it being the fasted growing area of crime. Some of the terms he used were phishing, identity theft, viruses, malware and ransomware. He went on to talk about the cost of cybercrime on society. Estimating the damages from cybercrime will be over $6 trillion by 2021.
He used surprising numbers like 92% and “over 350,000” to shock us into the reality that he sees every day. The first number, 92, is the percentage of cyber attacks by phishing where valuable information was stolen. The second terrifying figure (350,000) is the number of malicious programs that were created each day last year.
“Each day over 350,000 malicious programs were created last year.”
Later in his presentation he provided a “Checklist to Reduce Risk”. In the list he talked about what he liked to call his “nerd stuff”. That nerd stuff was however very valuable. He told us about better ways to handle Spam and Email. He spoke about Two-Factor Authentication, limiting administrator accounts, full disk encryption, and automatic screen locking. These were the basics. He shared much more information as well.
If any the italicized terms above are new to you or you need more information, Shawn will gladly share his presentation with anyone willing to reach out to him at: Shawn.Brown@SnapTechIT.com or Email kbickmore@snaptechit.com with your name, company name, and include in the subject line: "Cybersecurity Slide Deck"
