PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Welcome to the Sandy Springs Rotary Club

Welcome Sandy Springs Rotarians to the new Rotary year. It will be hard to top last year but we'll do it with your help & support. Kudos to past president Nancy Schroeder and PDG Jim Squire for your service and helping the club receive many awards at the District Celebration including our second "Club of the Decade" designation.

Some changes are being made in our club's meeting program to make it more varied & interesting. We will be adding the Sandy Springs Business Spotlight, a third raffle drawing, and wine one meeting a month. Members are now asked to come a little earlier as lunch will begin at noon with the program to start promptly at 12:15. Along with our traditional club events & projects we'll have a couple more service projects/media events, membership events (Rotary Pizza Night at Pontoon) and different Family of Rotary social events. I look forward to engaging with you to make it a exciting year.

Visitors are welcome to experience the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs' hospitality and energy. Meetings are typically the 1st, 2nd & 4th Mondays. Upcoming Program
SALLY PLATT, COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSSESSMENT

Sally Platt will be working with a team from the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs to help us conduct a community needs assessment.

Sally is a second-generation Rotarian and a member of the Rotary Club of Marietta Metro (D-6900).Her classification is Nursing – Pediatrics. She has been a Rotarian for 28 years. She served as President of her club in 2004-05, after having held several other officer and director positions. She received her club’s Rotarian of the Year award in 2002 and, as club president, received the District 6900 Sheffield Leadership Award.

After serving as the District Secretary, District Rotary Fellowships Chair, and District New Generations Chair, she became the D-6900 Grants Chair, a position she held for eight years. As such, Sally served as a resource to the other clubs in her district on both local and international projects and traveled to several other countries to participate in grant projects.

In addition, she led our district through the Future Vision Pilot program and served as a grants mentor/trainer for ten other districts up and down the east coast. She also is a former GSE team leader to D-9210 (Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi). In addition to her profession as a Registered Nurse for 33 years, Sally also has been an IT professional and is a former Chief Information Officer at Rotary International Headquarters. She is also a credentialed secondary school teacher of English Language Arts.

In 2003, Sally received the Four Avenues of Service Citation. In 2010, the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation awarded her the Citation for Meritorious Service. Then in 2016, the Trustees honored her with the highest award they can bestow on a Rotarian, the Distinguished Service Award. Sally also has received the Rotary Foundation District Service Award four times and is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow, Benefactor, and Bequest Society member. She has attended 13 Rotary International conventions.

Sally and her late husband were the parents of five children and she now has 12 grandchildren.

Past Program
Howard Shore & Dave Frew told us about Happy Tails Pet Therapy

On Monday September 14th, the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs hosted a virtual gathering with Howard Shore & Dave Frew.

First things first. Please forgive the technical hurtles we faced when we discovered the posted link did not work as advertised. We eventually had to initialize a new zoom meeting.

Once we did get started, Howard allowed us to meet three of his current dogs and Dave explained how he initially became involved with Happy Tails. Happy Tails volunteer teams provide physical, social, emotional, and cognitive therapy to people of all ages. Most people they visit tend to focus more on the fun they are having instead of the therapeutic benefits they receive! Dave explained that animal-assisted therapy and activity visits provide numerous cognitive, physical, social and emotional benefits. In a less active environment, such as a hospice or assisted living facility, your visit will provide stimulation, conversation, companionship, and sensory gratification to the patient, as well as comfort to the caretaker and family members. An entertaining animal, such as one that knows tricks, provides a welcome diversion to distract a resident from pain. Smiles and laughter are also great medicine. Even an animal that “only” has a sweet face and a gentle touch makes a valuable contribution in any kind of setting. Cat, rabbit, show dog or shelter dog, Happy Tails has a visit for you and your pet.

The Rotary Club of Sandy Springs would like to thank Dave & Howard for taking time to meet with us virtually. But wait there is more.

Dave & Howard have set a date to actually make an in person appearance with their dogs on Monday, January 25th 2021.
