Join Us for Thirsty Thursday Celebration at Dunwoody Tavern

We have booked Dunwoody Tavern for our Thirsty Thursday gathering this week - and enlisted Jud Shumway to share his wonderful music once again! Join us this Thursday, April 15,  from 5:30 to 7 PM on the covered patio. Think about bringing a friend who might be interested in Rotary!

Next Week's Special Meeting
Join Us for the DeKalb Rotary Council Annual Breakfast ... at the Dunwoody Country Club or Online

The DeKalb Rotary Council will host its Annual Awards and Recognition Breakfast on Friday, April 23rd starting at 7:15am at the beautiful Dunwoody Country Club. With vaccines in Georgia up and cases down at last, please plan on joining us to celebrate the hard working teachers who have been on the front lines of this epidemic. Our own Immediate Past President Cathie Brumfield will be presiding, as the current Chair of the DeKalb Rotary Council.

We are excited to have Leslie Hazel Bussy, Ph.D, CEO/Executive Director of the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement speaking to us on the topic, "Want to Serve the Community? Work on your Trustworthiness."

This is our annual Joint Meeting of all clubs in the DeKalb Rotary Council where we recognize each of our Club Teachers of the Year and Show Rotary Cares Award winners, and present the Council’s You are the Key Winner. We have selected the Dunwoody County Club because it is able to allow us to meet safely with adequate social distancing and good Zoom capabilities.

Breakfast will be served buffet style by DCC staff from behind a plexi-glass partition. Masks will be required when socially distancing is not possible.

You may also join the meeting via Zoom.

Service Opportunity
Help in the Wellspring Living Gardens - April 24

The Atlanta Rotary Council Against Human Trafficking will be working together on Saturday, April 24 to beautify the gardens at Wellspring Living's Receiving Hope Center and needs our help. The Center is the first stop for some of the minor children rescued from human trafficking.

There are some new areas where we are planning to plant a butterfly garden, complete a fence-line beautification, and plant a ceremonial anniversary tree. We will also be sprucing up a previously planted area with a few plants and pine straw.

This event is for anyone over the age of 14. You will need to bring work gloves, a mask, a hat, and sun protection. If you have a rake and/or shovel, that would be helpful. Water will be supplied. We are hoping to have around 20 people. If we have that many, it should only take about three hours.

All participants will need to complete and submit this non-disclosure agreement/ liability waiver for Wellspring Living. This event will be a multi-club event organized by The Atlanta Rotary Council Against Human Trafficking. All clubs are encouraged to participate and, if possible, donate to offset the costs of the plant and landscape material.

If you are interested, please contact Paul Ray (RC of Alpharetta) at paulray60@gmail.com and let Louise Barden know you plan to attend.. Please include your name and Rotary Club.

The address of the facility will only be sent to those that have signed up. We need to keep the location of this facility as secure as possible.

Service Opportunity
Dunwoody Arts Festival Returns May 7-9

We are excited to have the Dunwoody Arts Festival back for Mother's Day weekend 2021! Dunwoody Rotary has been a partner in this event since it first came to Dunwoody - it offers us a great opportunity for visibility in the community. This year's festival will operate under COVID guidelines.

This year the Arts Festival will take place at Brook Run on Saturday and Sunday, May 8 and 9. As a sponsor, we have opportunities to serve on Friday May 7 during set-up and Sunday, May 9 during breakdown - directing the artists to their spots and providing some help with unloading/loading. Artists will arrive throughout the day on Friday, and volunteer shifts are scheduled:

  • Friday - 10 am to 2 pm (three volunteers needed)
  • Friday - 2 pm to 6 pm (three volunteers needed)
  • Sunday - 5 pm to 7 pm (two volunteers needed)

The Club also plans to have a booth at the Festival promoting our organization and its work in the community. We will need volunteers to help with set-up on Friday and to be in the booth on Saturday and Sunday.

If you want to volunteer:

  • For set-up or breakdown, send an email to Kathy Brandt at Kgbrandt1@comcast.net with your name, preferred shift, email address and cell phone number
  • For the Dunwoody booth, send an email to Carter Stout at cstout@stoutkaiser.com with your name, preferred shift, email address and cell phone number

Service Opportunity
Georgia Special Olympics - May 29 ... Last Call for Volunteers

What: Olympics State Horse Show

When: Saturday, May 29, 11:45 am – 2:15 pm

Where: Wills Park Equestrian Center, 11915 Wills Road Alpharetta, Georgia 30009

Because of COVID guidelines, there have been very few in-person activities for Special Olympic athletes since March 2020. Therefore, the State Horse Show is a most welcome event. As an Official Sponsor of this event, the Rotary Club of Dunwoody has access to 15 volunteer spots. We are partnering with the Atlanta Rotaract Club on this volunteer opportunity. There are very few spaces left (maybe one or two - THANK YOU!) but still let Kathy Brandt know if you'd like to join us - we wouldn't mind having a back-up or two.

Volunteer registration is open now. Please register by April 20 by sending name, email and cell phone to Kathy Brandt at kgbrandt1@comcast.net. The event will be totally staged as an outdoor event with CDC COVID guidelines enforced for the event. In preparation for the event all participants, including volunteers, will be sent a link to a training session and two COVID waivers to be signed and returned to Kathy Brandt.
