Welcome Sandy Springs Rotarians, friends and guests.
So far, this Rotary year has been challenging coping with the COVID-19 pandemic. We thank all who have been able to attend meetings in person and on Zoom. Although our service projects have been limited by the virus we have been able to help school children needing distance learning and for those in our community needing food. We are also doing great with our medical recycling program benefiting seniors. I thank our club members and officers in working hard to hopefully have our club once again achieve “Club of the Year” status.
Visitors are welcome to experience the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs' hospitality and energy. Meetings are typically the 1st, 2nd & 4th Mondays. Lunch is served at noon and the 1 hour program begins at 12:15. Hilton Perimeter Suites, 6120 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Sandy Springs, GA 30328.
Reserve a spot by going to our website at www.sandyspringsrotary.org. Join your fellow professionals, community and business leaders, and learn how Rotary can benefit your future. Experience Rotary Making Things Happen in Sandy Springs!
On Monday, April 19, Captain Harold Earls, IV (Retired) spoke to our club about his time in the army and his intentions for the future.
As a 9th generation Georgian, Harold is a former Army Ranger Captain. In that capacity he served as the Commander at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Prior to that he led an army team to the summit of Mount Everest. He was an All-American Captain of the West Point Baseball team and recipient of the George Smythe Leadership Award.
During his presentation, Harold explained in detail what was involved in earning the job of guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
It is a cherished duty for any army soldier.
He notes that the army has been guarding the tomb continuously, 24 hours per day for the last 30,000 days. (Arlington National Cemetery web site notes that date to be April 6, 1948: https://www.arlingtontours.com/tomb-of-the-unknown-soldier)
In honor of the fallen soldiers, the tomb guards work on their uniforms themselves, spending many meticulous hours to be sure each uniform is perfect. In addition, and they never borrow any portion of accoutrement from other guards as a matter of respect. As a part of their training, they also must memorize seven pages of Arlington National Cemetery history verbatim in order to earn the right to “walk”.
In 1921, after World War I, General John Pershing convinced Congress to establish the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The guarding of the tomb did not start until much later. The unknown soldiers represent World War I, World War II, The Korean War and the Vietnam War.
