From Our District Governor

Keeping an Eye on Our Goals

By Mary Ligon

It has been a great summer to travel through Georgia and visit all of you and your great clubs. I particularly enjoyed all the great ideas and fellowship we shared at our District 6900 celebration in Sandestin and being on hand in Sandy Springs when Will MacArthur was honored for his Rotary Foundation giving as an Arch Klumph Society member. I'd also like to congratulate Mary Reid of the Rotary Club of Columbus for her 100th birthday - celebrated in style by the club! Congratulations to both Mary and Will for these significant achievements - and thanks to both for their dedication to Rotary. And congratulations to the clubs and individuals honored in Sandestin.

As we move forward into fall, Rotary International focuses on Basic Education and Literacy in September. Many of you have been working on projects to benefit education and youth - you can read about some of them in this newsletter. We are about to kickoff a major education initiative called Youth & Peace in Action (YPA)

Are You Ready for World Polio Day in October?

By Reda Rowell

Polio has for many years been a primary focus of Rotary around the world, and District 6900 has played an important role. We have accomplished so much, but we can’t stop until we cross the finish line and polio no longer exists. Coronavirus has, in many ways, overshadowed thoughts of polio. However just this past June four polio workers were killed by gunmen in Afghanistan. For polio to be completely eradicated we, as Rotarians, need to stay focused and continue our awareness and fundraising campaigns. Look for announcements about District 6900 plans for World Polio Day on October 24 and look for ideas for your club at endpolio.org.

Columbus Starting Midnight Basketball

By Anne Glenn

Last month, we started sharing the story of the three competitive $10,000 grants awarded this year to the Rotary Clubs of Buckhead, Columbus and Meriwether County. Each focuses on the needs of children and seniors in their communities. We will feature one in each of the next three newsletters - starting with Buckhead. This month we'd like to share how the Rotary Club of Columbus is using its grant to help local youth.

Columbus, Georgia is experiencing higher incidences of homicide and assault involving youth due to lack of resources and activities engaging them in more positive behavior. With help from The Columbus Rotary Club’s D6900 competitive Grant for $10,000, Cure Violence Columbus, Ga is reviving a program begun in the 90’s, Midnight Basketball League.

The Basketball program will provide a safe, positive environment for youth (ages 13-25). Midnight Basketball uses local coaches and mentors from 10:00 pm until 3:00 - times when most youth criminal activities occur. This is also an effort to reduce violent crimes in marginalized communities.
