This Week's Meeting
You Won't Find Us at LeMeridien This Week ... but Do Join President Jack Sparks at the AC Hotel/Bar Peri

Join us this Friday as President Jack Sparks leads us in a discussion of our plans for the year, our projects, and some new ideas. Rotary International's theme for the year is "Create Hope in the World" and our District Governor's theme is "Amplifying Rotary." Jack will share some thoughts and looks forward to hearing your ideas as we embark on this new Rotary year.

At the same time, we're trying out a new place  - The AC Hotel's Bar Peri on the top floor. It's not far at all from LeMeridien - set your navigation for AC Hotel by Marriott, Atlanta Perimeter, 40 Perimeter Center Place NE, Atlanta GA 30346. It's where we held our Mardi Gras Thirsty Thursday earlier this year. [more]

Welcoming New Members
Helping Dunwoody Grow!

With the help of Bob O’Brien, Jennifer Shumway, and Jack Sparks, Dave Burr led an orientation for six of our new Rotarians. They reviewed the club’s regular activities, RI and the Rotary Foundation, the club’s history, and several other topics. All the attendees left excited to engage in the club!

Fourth of July
We Learned to Dance in the Rain

There is a famous quote that embodies yesterday's Fourth of July celebration in Dunwoody - "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass ... It's about learning to dance in the rain." Dunwoody Rotarians who turned out yesterday morning to be part of the city's annual parade or volunteers in the club's Dunwoody Festival hot dog stand can tell you just what that means. President Jack said the downpour started just as the floats were starting to move out of St. Patrick's parking lot. And who would think you'd step across the parking lot at Dunwoody Village to get a coffee at Starbucks and then wade back across to the hot dog stand after a 20-minute storm.

That said, the sun was shining when the float came into Dunwoody Village - still looking fabulous despite the rain. Thanks to the 15-20 people who showed up at Jack's house to assemble the float and enjoy each other's company on Saturday, and to all who braved the storm yesterday to walk in the parade or work the hot dog booth. Appreciation goes to:

  • Jack and Marcella for hosting the float decorating party on Saturday, and "dancing" with their kids in the parade
  • Kobelah and Ed - who have led our hot dog stand efforts for several years now - and their crew of new and regular hot dog stand volunteers - including grillers Russell Reams and Erich Schuetz, cashier Tina Philpott and more
  • Jennie Stipick and new member Alison Norris for chairing the float committee.

Is this the first time we've celebrated in the rain on the Fourth in the 30+ years we've been part of Dunwoody's celebration. NOT! When Lorri Christopher was President, all the pictures featured giant umbrellas and plastic raincoats - and we're sure there were other rainy years.

Save the Date!
A Little More About FODAC Equipment Pick-Up: Saturday, August 5

For the last several years, Dunwoody has participated in the DeKalb Rotary Council's annual FODAC (Friends of Disabled Adults and Children) equipment drive. This year, the event will take place Saturday, August 5! The group will meet at the back patio of the 57th Restaurant, which is located next to PDK Airport on Clairmont Road in Chamblee, at 8:30 AM on Saturday August 5th where we provide breakfast and drinks for the volunteers and give everyone a few minutes to socialize before heading out to pick up equipment about 9 or 9:30.  Everyone is usually done between 1 and 2. We would love to have anyone that is interested in volunteering join us. This is a really good hands on project and is also a good project to bring prospective members to as well.

The Council will be looking for more trucks, trailers and volunteers to help collect donations. It's  a good hands-on project and a great way to introduce prospective members to Rotary as they get to contribute, see the results of their efforts and interact with Rotarians from several clubs.

Over the years, this project has collected approximately $1,800,000 worth of durable medical equipment from local residents and businesses in the metro Atlanta area that is refurbished and redistributed to those in need in our community by FODAC.
