Rotary Year 1991 — 1992

Walter had the honor of ushering in the new district number change from 690 to 6900. This change signified the rapid growth of Rotary International throughout the world, particularly in the Asian regions.

Once again, LaGrange College presented the district with a distinguished college president to serve the district as governor.

During the 1991-92 Rotary year the North DeKalb Club built two Habitat for Humanity Houses and paid for them in full. The Griffin Club built one Habitat House. The Buckhead Club established an Accord of Friendship with the City of Moscow Club in Russia building a bond between these two clubs and our two districts. The Thomasville Club held a model Drug Awareness seminar and sent truckloads of books to South African schools in especially successful community service projects. The Brookwood Mid-town Club sponsored a new Atlanta Rotaract Club which is off to a roaring start with 60 members, bright young professional and business people from Atlanta. This new Rotoract Club has an outstanding future of service.

Each club in the District was challenged by RI President Roger Saboo to celebrate the Rotary Foundation’s 75th Anniversary in a creative and appropriate way. This was especially meaningful for District 6900 since it was in 1917 at the Convention held in Atlanta that the Rotary Foundation was bom. Many clubs named non-Rotarians as Paul Harris Fellows in celebration.

The District Interact Conference in March at Stone Mountain featured 104 high school students, representing 40 Interact Clubs. The District participated in two Family Exchanges, one with German District 1900 and the other with bonnie brae Caledonians from District 1020, Scotland.

Six students from the District participated in Youth Exchange Programs with France, while the District received three young people from Germany.

The Group Study Exchange with District 4710, Parana, Brazil featured the Brazilians as guests at the District Conference at Jekyll Island in April. The District Conference also had the extraordinary honor of having RI President-Elect Cliff Dochterman as RI President Roger Saboo’s representative. This gave a special luster to the District Conference. There were 878 Rotarians in attendance with all but three clubs represented.

District 6900 joined with District 6910 and 6920 in featuring a Georgia Rotary Hospitality Center at the 1992 RI Convention in Orlando, offering southern hospitality to Rotarians the world over. The Center was grandly conceived and carried out.
