Newnan Speakers Engage Club

The Rotary Club of Newnan has welcomed some very engaging speakers recently:

  • Ken Bearden, founder of Veterans Fishing Organization Inc., spoke to the club about the role his organization plays in getting veterans the opportunity to go fishing. The VFO exists to provide military veterans, including but not limited to those with physical disabilities and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, with an opportunity for recreation and renewal through guided freshwater fishing and wildlife observation on lakes in Georgia and its bordering states. VFO provides a one-day experience of guided freshwater fishing and observation of wildlife on lakes in East Alabama and West Georgia at no cost to veterans.
  • Newnan's City Manager Cleatus Philips reported on the City's massive efforts to respond to a major tornado last March. Rotarian Parks Avery, whose home was damaged, said he remembered standing in the front yard and seeing the large track hoe coming down LaGrange Street with Newnan Utilities and city workers behind it in their yellow rain slickers. Philips said he is extremely proud of how the Coweta Community Foundation has stepped up to lead the long-term recovery process, and all the nonprofits - including the Rotary Club of Newnan and others in District 6900 - and churches have stepped up to help those impacted.
  • Award-winning Georgia author Victoria Wilcox recently spoke to the club about her work of chronicling the life of Western legend Doc Holliday.
