Guest Sheriff Craig Owens is a law enforcement professional with more than 30 years of service to his local community and the United States military.
Following family tradition, he enlisted in the Army upon graduating high school. After four years in the military, he joined the Cobb County Police Department and transitioned his military service to the Army Reserves, with a stint in the Army National Guard.
A proven leader, Owens excelled in his various assignments at the department, including uniform patrol, criminal investigations, special operations, adjutant to the chief of police, SWAT, ranger services, and director of animal services. He retired in December 2020 with the rank of major and as the commander of Precinct 2, the largest precinct in the county’s police department.
As a Command Sergeant Major in the Army Reserve, the highest rank possible for an enlisted soldier, Craig led a division of 14,000 personnel across 34 states and managed a budget of $51 million. Known for his steady hand, he was called upon to train soldiers and military police and to investigate wrongdoings in conflict zones, including Kuwait and Guantanamo Bay. Owens retired in summer 2020 after 36 years of dedicated service.
In November 2020, Owens made history by becoming the first African-American elected to be sheriff of Cobb County. Running on a platform of truth, trust, and transparency, he won the Democratic nomination outright and then went on to overtake an entrenched incumbent by earning 55.24% of the vote.
Sheriff Owens is a proud graduate of the FBI National Academy Class #225. He also holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Saint Leo University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University. He also holds has a Managerial Certification from the State of Georgia (GPSTC #PA04080032S), and a Local Government Management Certification from the University of Georgia Carl Vinson Institute.
Sheriff Owens is married to his high school sweetheart Sharon Owens. They reside in Mableton,GA where they raised three children and now enjoy spending time with their grandchildren. | 4 | 5 9 Buckhead: New Parks Initiative Event: Flower Planting and Picnic We'll be working across from the ball fields at NYO on Chastain Park Avenue. (formerly West Wieuca Road.) You'll park at the Chastain Arts Center at 135 Chastain Park Avenue, NW, Atlanta 30342. We'll begin planting at 9 AM and go until 11 AM. Then you'll drive over to Farm Chastain for lunch. (4001 Powers Ferry Road). A separate registration is required for the picnic, CLICK HERE for that registration. 11:30 Buckhead: Family Picnic for All (but join for the flower planting, if you can) Following the flower planting event from 9:00 until about 11:00 there will be a picnic for all Buckhead Rotarians and their families. Even if you can't help with the beautification of Chastain Park, you can share in the fun of the picnic. Reservations are REQUIRED so that we can have enough for everyone. We'll have a picnic lunch from Jason's Deli, and everyone is invited. It's a great time for fellowship for the entire club! The picnic will be held at Farm Chastain. The entrance to Farm Chastain is at 4001 Powers Ferry Road. Follow the drive to the pavilion being careful to avoid golfers teeing off on your left. Parking is available along the route.

Guest Back in 1936 Mr. J. G. Rossman, known as “Mr. Joe”, began by helping a nearby beekeeper, gaining knowledge and experience about bees. Mr. Joe formed a partnership, Rossman & Long, with a gentleman from Ohio who brought his bees each year to winter in South Georgia and supplied customers in the northern states with packaged bees and queens for use in the production of honey.
In 1952 the partnership was severed and the business became known as Rossman Apiaries. In the late sixties the company was incorporated by Fred and Phillip Rossman. Mr. Joe has since passed away, and Phillip has retired. Fred and his wife Ann now own and operate the business. In 1987 they expanded to the manufacturing and selling of bee supplies.
Fred and Ann Rossman took over the business in 1987 becoming the premiere choice for many Apiaries. Fred's expertise in manufacturing and supplying Cypress Wooden ware and Ann's ability to speak with customers about their beekeeping needs set the path for future owners. Fred and Ann have both retired; however, they left the business in great hands. Rossman Apiaries continues to spread knowledge and quality resources to aspiring beekeepers. | 11 | 12 |

Guest Lindy grew up in Mitchell County, Georgia- Perry in Thomas County. Perry was a banker for 20+ years and then a cattleman for 25+ years. In 2015 when Lindy retired from a federal law enforcement career spanning 30+ years, they decided to return to their roots in Mitchell and Thomas counties, where they own two small farms. Part of their plan was to bring their farms back to life, so to speak, and give back to their communities through the development of alternative niche, yet sustainable agricultural commodities. After researching everything from pomegranates to persimmons and lychee to crawfish, they decided citrus was the best fit for them and a commodity that would stimulate growth in Georgia’s agricultural economy.
Lindy and Perry planted a commercial citrus grove in Thomas County and a test plot in Mitchell County. They now sell fresh farm-grown Satsuma oranges, seedless tangerines, lemons, grapefruit, navels, mandarins, blood oranges,
thornless limes, and kumquats to the public right off their homestead called JoNina Farm near Ochlocknee, Georgia. In addition, Lindy and Perry started Georgia Grown Citrus LLC, (GGC), a commercial tree nursery hub partnering with four other commercial nurseries which propagate citrus trees for sale to commercial growers and homeowners. Among the available varieties GGC sells is the University of Georgia’s patented seedless, cold hardy citrus varieties found on the Specialties tab.
Over the last six years, citrus has become the primary topic of table discussions with family and friends. Guest TOMMY ALLEGOOD was raised in Atlanta, GA. Tommy is a 1970 graduate of Gordon Military College and served as a cadet in the ROTC program, and is a 1972 graduate of the University of Georgia. When Tommy graduated, he began a management career with Lowe's Companies which has always kept him in the building and development field. His leadership skills have enabled him to bring people together to accomplish goals and objectives as a team.
Tommy was elected to the Acworth city council in 2000 and then elected as Mayor in 2002. He is serving in his fifth unopposed term as Mayor where the city has since doubled in population to 24,000 residents. During his first days as Mayor, Tommy developed a “Quality of Life” campaign that has made Acworth the fastest growing city residentially and commercially in Cobb County.
Tommy is a member of NorthStar Church, Acworth Business Association, Cobb County Chamber of Commerce Northwest, PTA Partner at McCall Primary and Acworth Elementary, Partner in Education at Barber Middle School and North Cobb High School, Member of the Calvary Children's Home Advisory Board, and serves on President's Advisory Board at Kennesaw State University.
With personal expertise in team building, developing leadership, building and project development … Tommy is very active in the local community. He and wife Carol, a local artist and Signature Member of the Georgia Watercolor Society, have restored and live in a 100+ year old home in Acworth. University of Georgia Cooperative Extension is working hard for its constituents. The following are examples of Extension’s impact in the county over the past year.
THOMAS COUNTY 4-H AT A GLANCE
The Thomas County 4-H Program is grounded in the belief that young people learn best by doing. In our county, 4-H members complete hands-on projects in areas like civic engagement, agriculture and health and science, in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult volunteers and mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles.
Thomas County 4-H’ers are fortunate because they can concentrate on one focus area of their choice or they can try a variety of programs throughout their 4-H experience. Through participation in Georgia 4-H Project Achievement, 4-H’ers choose a project area of interest, research that topic, then write and present to a group of their peers. Through this experience, 4-H’ers develop public speaking, leadership, record keeping and many other skills. This opportunity empowers young people with skills that will last a lifetime. Challenging, encouraging, exploring and discovering is what the Thomas County 4-H Program is all about.
AGRICULTURE: Sydni's Ag Update
Sydni’s Ag Update is a radio program conducted by the Thomas County Extension Ag and Natural Resources Agent which airs on WPAX/WTUF, Georgia’s third oldest radio station which has been on air since 1922. This program covers agricultural news and information for growers, agribusinesses, and the general public. There is so much agricultural news for the public to sift through that there should be an unbiased voice for the community to hear. There are also nearly 300 licensed pesticide applicators in Thomas County who are presumably directly involved in the production of an agricultural product. With 44,451 Thomas County residents, this means that less than one percent are directly involved in production agriculture. Growers, agribusinesses, and community leaders need timely information on various topics in order to make critical management decisions. Radio reaches over 95% of almost every portion of the population, making it a far-reaching educational opportunity. To increase agricultural awareness through the radio program, the agent worked with Chris Hurst, one of the radio station employees at WPAX/WTUF to produce these programs. Currently the program reaches throughout several counties in South Georgia and North Florida and represents a total Farm Gate value of $1,388,215,194. From its start in April of 2019, the relationship grew and so did UGA Extension’s reach within the area. Since that time FACS and ANR have been able to share programs weekly. Sydni’s Ag Update has had an estimated audience of 20,000 listeners each week. | 25 | 26 8 District Training Assembly 2022 Join us in-person at the Columbus Trade Center (Ironworks) for training sessions covering the key elements of Rotary. Registration will open at 10 am, program starts at 11 with box lunches. There will be 2 breakout sessions and we will conclude at 3 pm. Breakout topics will include: Foundation grants, Membership, Rotary 101, Awards, Public Image and more. There are topics for every Rotarian - Bring the whole club! |
