PROGRAM: Michael McGavock, Rotary Global Grant project in eastern rural UgandaAdd Guest

Michael McGavock, International Service Chair for the Tacoma Sunrise Rotary Club in Tacoma, Washington and others will be our guests.

Tacoma Sunrise Rotary is commencing a multi-year Rotary Global Grant project in eastern rural Uganda in partnership with the Rotary Club of Kiwatule in Kampala, the capital city. The Global Grant will provide training and equipment to support the women in the farming program. Our Cooperating Organization is COFIA (Circle of Friends in Action). Their broader project with COFIA—now in its 5th year—has grown to 105 farmers with 73 acres of peanuts under cultivation… and plans for expansion. We recently held our third annual farming exposition with over 800 rural farmers in attendance over 3 days on the COFIA Demonstration Farm (COFIAUganda.org)

Michael McGavock & Carolyn Othieno will be visiting Americus for the annual Georgia Peanut Tour, September 17-19. One of the Ugandan researchers Dr. David Kalule and another colleague from COFIA Joseph Ochieng are trying to get visas to make the trip and join them. Carolyn grew up in Uganda, but now resides near Michael in Washington State. Carolyn is the founder of COFIA (Circle of Friends in Action) and Michael is on the board. We look forward to hearing about their Global Grant.
