Jeff Shaw is the Director of Rescue & Restoration at Atlanta Dream Center. Jeff received his B.A. in International Studies from Berry College and his J.D. from University of Georgia School of Law. Jeff enjoyed a successful law practice prior to starting Out of Darkness, the anti-trafficking ministry of Atlanta Dream Center, in 2011.

The ministry started as a 24-hour hotline but has grown to include street and strip club outreach, jail mentorship, a rescue hotline, and two safe homes. OOD has also launched chapters in Macon, GA and Columbus, Ohio. Jeff and his wife Haley recently had their first child, Olivia, and she already has dad wrapped around her finger.

Club Small Group Meetings

Your Ideas Needed: Small Group Discussions about Dunwoody Rotary

As we formally announced in last Friday’s meeting, we are embarking on a series of small group discussions with club members to gather more of your thoughts about the Rotary Club of Dunwoody – to learn more about what you value and how you perceive everything from our service initiatives to fund-raising, meetings and events, Family of Rotary, and the way we communicate.

Why are we doing this? It's good practice for every Rotary Club – every one of us – to stop and take stock of what we’re doing, what’s valuable, what’s important, what needs to change. That’s why we sent out a survey last year. And while the survey gave us some good information – it also strongly suggested a need for small group conversations as we look at the best ways to continue providing value to our members – and serve Rotary’s goals to make a significant difference in our communities and the world.

How can you help? By registering to attend a session … and investing a couple of hours in one of these group conversations. We have opened registration on the web site for four sessions (Feb. 20, 21 and Mar. 6, 8) and will be adding more over the next few days. To register, please go to https://dunwoodyrotary.org/v2/calendar/view and click on one of the dates that shows “Small Group Discussion about Dunwoody Rotary” and add your name. We’re limiting the size of each group to allow for good productive conversations. We will schedule enough sessions so that everyone may join us. Your attendance will count as a make-up.

If you have questions about these sessions, please feel free to contact Jackie Cuthbert, who is leading this initiative.

NEW GEORGIA ROTARY STUDENT PROGRAMSTRATEGIC STUDY

The Georgia Rotary Student Program has invited the Fanning Institute to assist us in strategic planning. We are optimistic that all aspects of the program will be reviewed with solutions to some of our most pressing problems and a plan for the future. As part of that process:

* During the Leadership Conference, the students this year were asked to participate in strategic planning for GRSP, so the Fanning Institute sent a list of questions for the students. The students were asked to separate into groups of 4-6 students and each group was given a laptop computer.
They were asked to answer the questions that were flashed up on the main screen in the room. The answers would be typed into the laptop and would be flashed on the main screen, so that everyone could see; however, the laptops were anonymous, so that no one knew which group made which reply to which question. Several questions were asked and the students enthusiastically answered.
* After student selection in Savannah, trustees and directors were divided into groups of six to participate in a session exactly like the students. The representatives from the Fanning Institute told us afterward that the answers given by the trustees and directors were much the same as the students, which we all found to be very interesting. We were much more aware than we were led to believe by others.
We are being asked to submit names and contact information for Rotarians, past and present host families, past students and anyone whom we feel might be able to provide some insights into what the Georgia Rotary Student Program must do to remain relevant. You may submit your information to your trustee or directly to me. Some people may be asked to participate in a questionnaire and some may be asked to be interviewed in person. It would be helpful to GRSP if you could make yourself available.
We are hopeful that we will have some information by our summer meeting in July. We expect that the students for next year will also participate and be asked specific questions about the application process and their experience in the months following by District 6900 GRSP Chair Lynn Clarke, Rotary Club of Bremen.

JOIN US FOR ROTARY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (RLI)

The Rotary Club of Tucker will host an RLI event on March 10, 2018 - Parts 1, 2, 3 and a Grad Course in The Rotary Foundation will be offered, registrations permitting. Tucker Middle School will be the location. Registration check-in begins at 7am with breakfast and the event is from 8 am to 3:15 pm. The cost is $100.00 per course.

RLI is all about giving you the necessary tools and skills to be better Rotarians. As in every endeavor, the more you know about anything, the more interesting it becomes. Rotary is most assuredly one of those areas that the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. RLI can make that possible for you. Graduates of RLI are more likely to remain in, and be a bigger part of Rotary, than any other demographic.

Check out the complete information and register at www.rlitraining.org

Rotary Club of Dunwoody Happy Hour

3rd Thursday - February 15th - Taco Mac Perimeter - Rotary Club of Dunwoody Happy Hour starting at 5:30 PM - Join us!

NEW AR PAYMENT PROCEDURES

Now that the club has tested its new online billing payment process for the last few quarters, we are moving to further enhance the efficiency of the collection process. All invoices sent are due upon receipt, and the club will allow some time for payment receipt. The board has approved a new policy that effective with the 4/1/18 invoicing process, any member who has a past due balance of 90 days will be asked for a credit card or account to be placed on file to allow automatic collection. If the member is 90 days past due, and refuses to provide the automatic collection information, the Board will be asked to terminate that member at the next Board meeting.
Please reach out to Cathie Brumfield (CBrumfield@MagnoliaFinancial.com) with any questions on this new policy.
