SPEAKER THIS WEEK: Grant Morain
Grant Morain is an attorney who prepares and tries cases for injured individuals. He represents people who have been injured due to the negligence of others. He has been in practice for about 25 years, representing plaintiffs for 20. Grant encourages resolving disputes amicably and promptly and does not believe in fighting unnecessary battles that are not winnable, but also recognizes that insurance companies sometimes refuse to pay fair compensation, making amicable resolution impossible. Therefore, the firm thoroughly prepares each case for trial before a judge or jury yet remains vigilant for opportunities to negotiate a settlement that will save clients time and money. Grant takes pride in being an effective trial lawyer on the side of people.
Grant Morain grew up in Ohio, where he played shortstop on his high school team. He is a co-founder of Backstop Ventures, LLC, which he formed to invest in baseball. Grant is the owner of the Savannah Gnats, who in 2016 moved to Columbia SC and became the Columbia Fireflies.
Grant is married to Kristine Morain, herself a practicing attorney with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (the national organization). He has a son who is a freshman at Georgia Tech and a daughter who is a freshman in high school at Greater Atlanta Christian School.
He graduated from Davidson College and Emory University School of Law.
Special Olympics
Rotary Service Opportunity – November 9, 9:30am – 1:00pm (shifts available)
Special Olympics Basketball Skills Clinic and Competition
For more than a decade Dunwoody Rotarians have helped Peachtree Charter Middle School host a Basketball Skills Clinic and Competition for 200+ students representing special needs programs in DeKalb County middle schools.
What will Rotary Volunteers do?
Working in teams of two or three, Rotarian volunteers will help conduct the team competition (as scorekeepers and assistants) and offer encouragement and support to the student participants. Rotary’s presence helps make this event possible for host Peachtree Charter Middle School and for 200+ student and teacher participants.
How do I sign up?
Volunteers may sign up by selecting a shift (below) and sending email or text to Kathy Brandt – kgbrandt1@comcast.net, 404-797-0705.
Shift #1 9:30am – 11:00am
Shift #2 11:00am – 1:00 pm
Shift #3 9:30am – 1:00 pm (both shifts)
Why is this event important?
The mission of Special Olympics can be summarized by the following description: “Transforming Lives Through Sports”. Through participation in athletics, Special Olympics athletes learn life skills that
transfer to home, community, school, workplace. The rewards from participation as a volunteer for this event are “priceless”.

Volunteer Opportunities
This Saturday October 13, 2018 we will plant five trees in the wooded area surrounding the Veterans Memorial in Brook Run Park.(The memorial is close to the main entrance on North Peachtree Road.)This activity is the brainchild of our energetic Rotarian, Ken Levy.His vision is to create a “Rotary Grove” of twenty trees, by planting five a year for four years.This will be our second year.Our project is in conjunction with Trees Atlanta (TA) Planting Day.They will be providing logistical and technical support.
We need some strong women and men to show up at 0830.After training on how to properly plant a tree, we will start the planting.Who wants to dig some holes?Just kidding, Trees Atlanta will have already done that for us.The trees will be waiting for us right by their excavated area.Trees Atlanta will provide the necessary tools:shovels and gloves (sorry Hoshi, you have to bring your own work ethic).There will be water available, and they ask us to bring our own refillable water bottles.
As I said above, we did this last year and it only took several hours.The more person power, the quicker the job gets done.When we are done, if we’re not too tired, we can help Trees Atlanta plant other trees around the memorial; they are planning to plant a total of 35.
You said volunteer opportunities Fred, what gives?The following Saturday October 20, 2018 we are having our periodic “spruce up” at Bounds Gardens at Monroe Park (the traffic island across Chamblee Dunwoody from the Dunwoody Library.)Routine stuff:some weedin’, some sweepin’, and some clippin’.
We meet at 0900 and with enough volunteers we will be done in an hour, max.(This is much longer than Hoshi’s attention span, but I gotta work with what I have, ya know?)It’s a lot of fun and a great way to get to know some of your fellow Dunwoody Rotarians.
Look, I know you may be hesitant to join us, figuring elite units like ours don’t cotton to those whose bodies are too frail (Hoshi gets a Ranger Fred waiver) or generally all outsiders.Nothing could be further from the truth; we put our gardening gloves on just like you, one hand a time.So come on out and fool around in the dirt.If you get winded, or need a break you can talk to Hoshi, he’s always ready to talk.

Rotary Grove Planning
The Club will dedicate the addition to our Rotary Grove at Brook Run Park (4770 North Peachtree Road, Dunwoody, Georgia 30308)
on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 10:00 a.m.
The Dunwoody Diners
The Dunwoody Diners will hold another installment of the Dining Club on Saturday,
October 27, 2018 at Carbonara's Trattoria (5499 Chamblee Dunwoody Rd. opposite the Dunwoody Post Office, 678 587-9100.)
The reservation is at 7:30 pm. Diners pay for their own meals and asked to donate $ 5.00 per person to the Club's Charitable Fund.

West Side Story
We have made arrangements for a group rate purchase of tickets for the Friday, November 9, 2018 performance of West Side Story. The performance will be at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre (2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway, Atlanta, Georgia 30339) at 8:00 pm. Provided we have 10 persons or more committed to attend we can get a discounted group rate $ 83.00 per ticket for Orchestra Mezzanine seats. In order to reserve the tickets we need to pay the Theater a 10% deposit with the balance due two weeks prior to the performance (October 26, 2018).
Looking for a Rotary Youth Exchange host Family
Rotary Club of Dunwoody is going to be hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange Student from Thailand 
, Mink , who just arrived!
We are excited to see her often and share with her this experience!
And we are still looking for host families who want to share this awesome experience for 90 days, (for late February through May).
Hosting a Rotary Youth Exchange Student can be incredibly rewarding for your family, bringing an international experience directly into your home. Host families provide room and board and share their lives with the Rotary Youth Exchange Students, involving them in family, community, and cultural activities. The Rotary Club of Dunwoody is looking for host families for our inbound student for next year, Mink from Thailand.
If you’re willing to experience one of the largest programs in Rotary by sharing your home and learning about a new culture, or you know a family that would be interested, contact Mike Parks, Deb Shelles Cameron, Dottie Toney-Ransom, Tania Lopez, or Jennie Stipick.
What are the responsibilities of a host family?
To accept the exchange student as a new member of your family. The student will be governed not only by the rules of the program but by the rules of your household. You are responsible for the safety of the exchange student the same as for your own children. Although you might become a bit more of the soccer mom or dad for normal everyday activities, it is not your responsibility to act as a taxi service or a tour guide. Rotarians for the hosting club will be helping in these areas.
