Lake Spivey/Clayton County Honors STAR Students and Teachers

In early March, the Rotary Club of Lake Spivey/Clayton County hosted a lunch program to honor this year's STAR students and teachers from Clayton County's 11 public high schools.

"STAR" stands for Student Teacher Achievement Recognition. The program is sponsored at the state level by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators. To be selected as a high school's STAR Student, the candidate must meet several criteria including having obtained the highest score for her or his high school class on a single test date for the SAT college entrance exam and be in the top ten percent or top 10 students of her or his class based on grade point average. After being identified, each STAR student then selects the teacher who had the most influence on her or his high school academic career. This person becomes the STAR teacher.

Clayton County School Superintendent Morcease Beasley, school principals, and some parents also attended the March 11 event. Rotary Club of Lake Spivey/Clayton County member and Past District Governor Claudia Mertl chaired the program with assistance from Past President Jeoff Hamilton. As shown in the photo, they are preparing to give the individual awards to the STAR students and teachers from the eleven Clayton County High Schools.

The event was live streamed and may be found at the Club's Facebook page:
