Why October 24?
World Polio Day was established by Rotary International to
honor Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the first successful polio
vaccine in 1955. It’s a day to raise global awareness about polio,
a crippling and potentially deadly disease, and to recognize the incredible
progress made toward its eradication.
A Global Movement
Since the launch of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) in
1988, polio cases have dropped by 99%, and over 20 million
people have been spared from paralysis thanks to vaccination efforts.
But the fight isn’t over - polio remains endemic in a few countries, and
continued support is critical to:
