Sometimes, making a difference begins with simply noticing an opportunity to help.

Recently, a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Atlanta Southern Crescent came across a heartfelt social media post shared by respected community leader Crystal Perry, founder of Melanated Pearl Corp. In her post, Crystal shared the story of a hardworking father who had recently secured employment but had been living in his car with his daughter, who is preparing to begin kindergarten this fall.

Through the compassion and dedication of Crystal Perry and the Melanated Pearl team, the father was able to secure stable housing, providing his family with a safe place to begin a new chapter.

Inspired by Crystal’s post, the Rotarians of the Rotary Club of Atlanta Southern Crescent wanted to help make the little girl’s first year of school even more special. The club generously pooled together $300 and shopped for a variety of items from a wish list provided by Dad. The goal was simple: to help ensure his daughter could begin kindergarten feeling prepared, confident, and excited. The Rotarians purchased a wonderful collection of school essentials and thoughtful gifts, including:

• School clothing
• Shoes
• School supplies
• A backpack and lunch bag
• A stainless steel water bottle
• A soft fleece blanket
• Several cuddly stuffed animals
• Additional items to help make her first days of kindergarten memorable

Those gifts were delivered to Dad and his wonderful daughter. Seeing her excitement and knowing these items will help her start kindergarten with confidence made the day especially meaningful.

Acts of service often begin with one person sharing a need and others choosing to respond. What started as a social media post became an opportunity for a young girl to begin the school year with the essentials she needed and a reminder that her community believes in her.
