For 30 years, runners have gathered in Vinings for an August tradition that has become about so much more than crossing a finish line.

This year, the Vinings Downhill 5K Run for the Kids celebrated its 30th anniversary in a big way, welcoming more than 1,300 runners for a beautiful morning of competition, community and, most importantly, service.

Hosted by the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland, the race has grown over three decades into one of our club’s signature events. While we were fortunate to have nearly perfect weather and plenty of smiling faces along the course, the real measure of success came in what our community accomplished together: more than $100,000 raised for children’s charities.

Those funds will be distributed in January to organizations serving children and families in our community, continuing the purpose that has been at the heart of this race from the very beginning.

Of course, a milestone like 30 years deserves a celebration! Following the race, runners, volunteers, sponsors, families and friends gathered at Vinings Jubilee for an after-party that brought even more energy to the morning. It was a great reminder that while the race may bring us together, it is the sense of community surrounding it that makes the Vinings Downhill 5K so special year after year.

An event of this size simply doesn’t happen without a tremendous amount of teamwork. Months of planning go into race morning, and we are incredibly grateful for the Rotarians, volunteers, sponsors, community partners and participants who continue to show up and support this event. Thirty successful years are the result of countless people who have given their time, resources and energy to make a difference.

As Rotarians, we often talk about creating lasting impact. There may be no better example than seeing an event continue to grow, thrive and serve others three decades after it began.

To everyone who ran, walked, volunteered, sponsored, cheered or helped behind the scenes - thank you for making the 30th anniversary of the Vinings Downhill 5K one to remember.
