Vinings Cumberland Helps Bring Tandem Cycling to Blind Athletes

A tandem bicycle ride takes two cyclists working together. For athletes who are blind or visually impaired, the Georgia Blind Sport Association (GBSA) makes that partnership an opportunity to enjoy cycling, and the Rotary Club of Vinings Cumberland is glad to help make the rides possible.

Rotarian Kent Osborne, who has spearheaded this initiative, brings his experience as an avid cyclist and physical therapist to the project. He adjusts and helps maintain the tandem bikes, drawing on the bicycle fitting work he does with his clients. He also rides as a pilot in the front seat, guiding the bike while the athlete in the second seat, known as the stoker, helps power it.

Other club members support the rides by transporting athletes between Cumberland Mall and the Floyd Road trailhead, then providing refreshments at the trailhead. These practical contributions help GBSA offer another way for athletes to get out, ride, and take part in a sport they enjoy.

It is a rewarding partnership for Vinings Cumberland Rotary: members sharing their time and skills so more people can experience the ride.
