Dr. Jim Herron Recognized as a Pillar of Service and Beloved Rotarian

At one of its September weekly meetings, Rotary Club of Americus President Rene Smith recognized Dr. Jim Herron with the District Governor’s Golden Jubilee Commendation, in honor of Dr. Herron’s 50 years of service above self as a Rotarian. The award was given on behalf of DG Jim Squire and District 6900 - to an individual who has remained active in Rotary even in his golden years of retirement.

DG Jim and his wife Donna recognized two long-serving Americus Rotarians at his special visit to the club. The second - Broadus Willoughby, has been a Rotarian for nearly 65 years (now honorary). Broadus is no longer able to attend club meetings, but Dr. Herron remains an active contributing member and rarely misses a meeting. Due to an unexpected (and thankfully short-term) health issue, Dr. Herron was unable to accept his award during DG Jim’s official visit to Americus and had to cancel plans to attend a joint club dinner of the Americus and Cordele Clubs held honor of DG Jim and Donna Squire.

Herron, a Kentucky native, moved to Americus in 1969 where the weather was warm and physicians were in demand. Having had prior training in tuberculosis control, he worked with the Georgia Department of Health and was a beloved physician in the Americus area for years. After his retirement in 2002, he returned to his childhood passion of woodworking, a talent he learned alongside his father. He is well-known for his one-legged corner tables, a design he found while he and his wife Nancy were visiting Williamsburg, Virginia. He has also known for building violins…his creations have been gifted to Rotarians and have been donated to the Sheffield Gala Silent Auction in May each year to raise funds for club projects.

Dr. Jim Herron is a Paul Harris Fellow and a Will Watt Fellow. He has faithfully served the Americus Club with his time, talents and treasures and has given many years of faithful service through Rotary to the local community, our nation and the world. He lives the four-way test and is a model of service above self to all who know him.

Upon receiving the award, Dr. Herron stated “In addition to all the good that Rotary does and the impact it makes in communities and around the world, I can tell you that it has also benefitted me - both personally and professionally.”
