Lake Spivey/Clayton County Welcomes Middle School Science Fair Competitors

During a March Zoom meeting, the Rotary Club of Lake Spivey/Clayton County featured middle school students selected from the annual Clayton County Science Fair to represent the region at The Georgia Science & Engineering Fair (GSEF.) The fair at the state level traditionally is held annually in March/early April in Athens, Georgia. Every year in January and February thousands of pre-collegiate students compete in local science fairs across the state. Following GSEF procedures, top projects from each regional fair are invited to attend and compete at GSEF in Athens where the participants "have the opportunity to share their research with some of the top scientists in Georgia and compete for awards and scholarships."

Rotarian Dr. Masi Sambandham, professor of Mathematics at Morehouse College in Atlanta organized the presentation. Dr. Morcease Beasley, Superintendent of Clayton County Public Schools introduced the students to the audience of Rotarians, with assistance from Ms. Janetta Greenwood and Ms. Tameaka Mckinney from the Department of Science . The middle school scholars then provided a brief description of their projects which they will be presenting at GSEF in April. The students, their schools, and their projects are

  • Kyleigh Conley, Elite Scholars Academy, "Testing Local Soil and Water"
  • Joseph Archibong, Elite Scholars Academy, "How Does Temperature Affect Strength?"
  • Lorc Lorme, Elite Scholars Academy, "The Education of Haitian Immigrants"
  • Yaremi Canas Periban, Babb Middle School, "Soft Robotics Air Powered Gripper"
  • Mercy Akhabue & Victoria Umoh, Mundy's Mill Middle School, "An In-Depth Study of the HPV Vaccine"

To recognize their accomplishments and dedication, the Rotary Club provided each scientist with a $50 cash award and funds to cover the $29 per student registration fee for the competition at the State level.
