Do You Have Remnants of Original Piedmont Forest in Your Backyard?

There was lots of interest when Kathryn Kolb from EcoAddendum spoke to the club last Friday. Atlanta metro was settled and built out after 1821 ⎼ much later than other U.S. and world cities. As a result, we have many more of our native trees left than other large cities. Are those in your neighborhood or backyard. Look for:

  • Steep slopes - not farmed, not buildable until now
  • Stream corridors - especially with narrow floodplains
  • Rocky places - not farmed
  • Large tracts, historic properties and memorial sites
  • Older neighborhoods – where home were built “to grade” and trees were saved for shade

Ironically, old growth trees can found in urban places – which were protected from widespread logging after the 1870’s. And trees do not have to be large to be old.
