Our ability to read is critical to our intellectual development, our options for a successful career and a good understanding of our world. Unfortunately the ability of our students to read has fallen dramatically across our nation and Georgia is no exception (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/11/us/reading-math-test-scores-education-nwea.html?searchResultPosition=3). The Sandy Springs Education Force encourages local organizations, especially Rotary Clubs, to find volunteers to help young students to learn to read well. At its core, Reading Buddies aims to cultivate a lifelong love for reading among children of all ages. The program recognizes the pivotal role reading plays in cognitive development and academic success, and it is steadfast in its commitment to providing youngsters with the tools they need to succeed. By creating an environment where young minds can explore the realms of imagination through books, Reading Buddies fosters not only literacy skills but also a deep appreciation for storytelling.
The Reading Buddies program understands that its impact reaches far beyond the realm of reading. By fostering a sense of responsibility, empathy, and mutual respect between generations, it equips both students and volunteers with invaluable life skills. These interactions instill in young learners the importance of giving back to the community and nurturing positive relationships—a lesson that will serve them well in all facets of life.
The Rotary Club of Sandy Springs has four members who have been working with third grade students at Lake Forest Elementary School. Here are a few photos of these Rotarians and the students they helped. If your club is not providing Reading Buddies, it is time to go.
