Arush Lal of Johns Creek, Georgia is one of two District 6900 Rotary Global Grant Scholars who will begin graduate studies abroad in September 2018. A 2017 graduate of Georgia Tech (Business and Economics), Lal is enrolled in a Masters of Health Policy and Financing program offered jointly by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and London School of Economics. Upon completion of his scholarship year, Arush plans to continue in pursuit of a career focused on Disease Prevention and Treatment, one of Rotary’s top humanitarian priorities, also known to Rotarians as Rotary’s six areas of focus.
Since graduating from Georgia Tech, Lal has gained health policy experience working as a fellow at the Global Health Corps in Washington, DC. Assigned to work at Interhealth International, Lal is learning and researching matters in Global Health Security. His fellowship experience includes conducting research, learning from health policy professionals, meeting global leaders and making presentations in such places as Washington, D.C.; Geneva, Switzerland at WHO headquarters; Ireland; and, at the UN. In July, Lal will travel to Tanzania for field work and research.
A significant part of a Global Grant Scholar’s experience is centered around relationships with Rotarians, here in District 6900, the Sponsor District, and in London District 1130, in the Host Rotary Club of Chiswick & Brentford. The Rotary Club of Buckhead is Lal’s “home club.” Under the leadership of Mark Keramidas, the club’s scholarship committee identified Lal as a promising candidate for the scholarship and supported him throughout the application process. Representing the District 6900 Scholarship Committee, Rotarian Mike Irvin (RC Muscogee-Columbus), is serving as a personal coach and mentor to this talented young professional. During his scholarship year, Lal will cultivate relationships with Host Rotarians in the UK.
As you can see, the partnership with this promising young scholar is off to an excellent start, and he is poised to achieve the goals of the Rotary Global Grant Scholarship. The scholarship’s purpose is two-fold:
